Nokia and UNICEF announce digital education initiative in Senegal

Telecoms vendor Nokia has announced a new collaboration with UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, to bridge the digital divide by helping to improve digital education and training in schools in parts of Senegal.

The project, with UNICEF Finland and UNICEF Senegal, will involve teachers as well as students in underserved areas in Senegal. The focus will be on digital education and training activities so students can develop their digital skills, including coding.

The principal beneficiaries are more than 100 teachers, as well as more than 10,000 middle school students in underserved areas. The scope of work includes specific sessions on digital skills, as well as upgrading equipment and connectivity.

This activity is in line with Nokia’s enhanced environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy, announced in October 2022, as well as Nokia’s commitment to advance digital skills. The ESG strategy builds on five strategic focus areas: environment, focusing on both climate and circularity; industrial digitalization; security and privacy; bridging the digital divide; and responsible business.

Silvia Danailov, UNICEF Representative in Senegal, says: “UNICEF works to ensure that no child or young person is left behind in the digital revolution. This catalytic partnership with Nokia is a major step in furthering quality education through innovative technology for children in Senegal.”

UNICEF works in over 190 countries and territories to protect the rights of every child.
