New entrant plans big investment in Indonesian data centre sector

A deal that has the potential to be one of the largest foreign investments in the data centre sector in Indonesia, carrying an estimated enterprise value of US$300 million, has just been announced.

Big Data Exchange (BDx), a leading data centre solutions provider in Asia-Pacific, says it has inked a conditional sale and purchase agreement of shares (CSPA) and joint venture agreement, together with a series of commercial and operational agreements, with service provider Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH), business information and communications solutions provider PT Aplikanusa Lintasarta, and telecommunications company PT Starone Mitra Telekomunikasi.

Through this strategic agreement, which marks BDx’s entry into the Indonesian data centre market, BDx will collaborate with IOH and Lintasarta to establish what it describes as a trailblazing data centre and cloud-focused operation in Indonesia.

The joint venture is being formed to meet Indonesia’s growing need for a higher level of global data centre facilities, focusing on multiple industries, including financial services, hyperscalers, telecom operators and government organisations.

In fact BDx references a recent report released by Mordor Intelligence that suggests that the Indonesian data centre market was worth US$1.67 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow to US$3.43 billion by 2027, with a compound annual growth rate of more than 13%.

Customers in Indonesia will soon gain access to BDx’s existing carrier-neutral network that spans Hong Kong, mainland China and Singapore, as well as its data centre infrastructure and maintenance tools. BDx customers and hyperscalers in other markets will be able to connect to the company’s new Indonesian data centres and infrastructure seamlessly.

BDx is a pan-Asian hybrid, hyperscale and edge solutions provider with assets located in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Nanjing and Singapore. Its hybrid ecosystem provides colocation, security, private cloud services, disaster recovery services, and interconnect solutions across cloud service providers, telcos, internet exchanges and major data centres.
