Data centre development in India’s largest city Mumbai looks like enjoying an enormous boost after some recently announced plans from major players in the data centre industry.
Digital infrastructure company Equinix says it has completed the acquisition of the Indian operations of GPX Global Systems, which builds and operates next-generation Tier 4, private, carrier-neutral data centres in emerging, commercial markets.
The $161 million all-cash transaction includes a fibre-connected campus in Mumbai with two data centres.
Equinix says the two new International Business Exchange data centres in Mumbai, called Equinix MB1 and MB2, form a network-dense data centre campus with more than 350 international brands and local companies, including the world's leading cloud service providers, global networks, content delivery network providers, all local carriers, 170 internet service providers and five internet exchanges.
The two data centres in Mumbai provide an initial 1,350 cabinets, with an additional 500 cabinets planned. The facilities will add more than 90,000 square feet (about 8,361 square metres) of colocation space to the company’s resilient and secure data centre platform – called Platform Equinix – when fully built.
Equinix's Mumbai campus offers a cloud-dense environment and direct access to major cloud services, on top of which the company plans to introduce a full range of interconnection and digital infrastructure services in the new data centres upon the completion of the business integration.
These will enable customers in India to connect in real time, directly and privately, to more than 10,000 companies, including more than 1,800 networks and 3,000 cloud and IT service providers, through Platform Equinix for increased performance, security and scale.
An additional piece of Mumbai-focused data centre news comes from global technology services provider NTT, whose Mumbai 8 data centre will go live soon with an IT load of 85MW in Mumbai’s hyperscale data centre park.
Over the next 18 months, four new hyperscale data center parks will also become operational, two in Navi Mumbai and one each in Chennai and Delhi, adding approximately 133MW of IT load and 50,000 square metre of floorspace.
NTT says that interconnections for ten data centres across India will also be rolled out in 2021 and that submarine cable landing stations are planned in Mumbai and Chennai.
