Jio Platforms and Meta bring end-to-end shopping in India to WhatsApp

It’s not just Indian operator Reliance Jio that has been making the news for parent company and  multinational conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd. Now RIL’s technology business Jio Platforms and US technology giant Meta have collaborated to launch JioMart on WhatsApp.

Described as “the first-ever end-to-end shopping experience on WhatsApp" and “a global first”, JioMart on WhatsApp will enable users in India, including those who have never shopped online before, to seamlessly browse through e-commerce company JioMart’s entire grocery catalogue, add items to a cart, and make the payment to complete the purchase – all without leaving the WhatsApp chat.

The launch is described as part of a strategic partnership between Meta and Jio Platforms to accelerate India’s digital transformation and provide people and businesses of all sizes with opportunities to connect in new ways and fuel economic growth in the country.

The  partners say that the JioMart on WhatsApp experience will revolutionize the way millions of businesses across the country connect with their consumers while bringing unparalleled simplicity and convenience to people’s shopping experience. Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO, Meta, says: “Business messaging is an area with real momentum and chat-based experiences like this will be the go-to way people and businesses communicate in the years to come."

For Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director, Reliance Industries, it’s been a busy few days. Following a flurry of announcements from operator Reliance Jio, which is reportedly partnering with many major names for a 5G rollout investment estimated at $25 billion, his online retail operation has now been massively boosted or, as he puts it: “The JioMart on WhatsApp experience furthers our commitment of enabling a simple and convenient way of online shopping to millions of Indians.”
