Malaysia, Nigeria and Bolivia have all been trialling 5G – at least one of them with an eye to 5G rollout in 2020.
In Malaysia, nationwide demonstrations of 5G technology will begin next month, according to Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo, expanding regional trials that began earlier this year in Putrajaya and Cyberjaya and were then extended to five states.
Meanwhile the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reserved spectrum in the 26GHz, 38GHz and 42GHz bands for 5G networks, according to local press reports, with the aim of allocating the currently unassigned frequencies to enable the rollout of 5G services in 2020. Preparations to trial the technology, including, reports suggest, an assessment of security-related issues, are underway.
Finally Entel – Bolivia’s largest mobile operator by subscribers – has announced that it has successfully trialled 5G at the recent Expocruz 2019 international trade fair held in Santa Cruz and that it is thus the first Bolivian mobile operator to demonstrate the technology. Downlink transmission speeds of up to 1Gbps were reached in the trials which were carried out in conjunction with Huawei.
